The rotation of the shaft allows the jaws to move closer to the drum, generating the friction necessary to slow down or stop the vehicle.

The lever also performs another important function: managing the play between the jaws and the drum. This space must remain within correct values. Excessive play can increase the travel required to activate the brake, while inadequate adjustment can cause abnormal contact and overheating of the system.

Automatic and manual brake levers

Brake levers for industrial vehicles can be mainly divided into two categories: manual and automatic.

Manual levers require periodic checks and adjustments to compensate for wear on the friction parts and maintain correct play in the braking system.

Automatic brake levers, also known as automatic adjusters, are designed to progressively compensate for variations in play during normal use of the vehicle. The mechanism intervenes to maintain the stroke within the parameters set by the system.

However, the presence of automatic adjustment does not eliminate the need for controls. Anomalies, wear, corrosion or incorrect installation can compromise the functioning of the lever and the entire system.

What are the signs of a worn brake lever?

A problem with the brake lever can manifest itself through different signals. Among those not to be underestimated we find:

  • excessive travel of the brake chamber rod;
  • uneven braking between the wheels;
  • need for frequent adjustments;
  • abnormal play in the mechanism;
  • noises during operation;
  • difficulty in maintaining correct registration;
  • uneven wear of braking components;
  • drum overheating.

These symptoms may also depend on other elements of the system. It is therefore important to carry out a complete check, including the brake chamber, camshaft, shoes, drum, mounts and adjustment mechanism.

Why are maintenance and assembly important?

A compatible brake lever can only work correctly if installed and adjusted according to application specifications. Incorrect assembly can change the geometry of the system, compromise the useful stroke and cause a non-uniform braking response.

During maintenance it is advisable to check:

  • state of the lever and attacks;
  • freedom of movement;
  • presence of corrosion or damage;
  • operation of the automatic mechanism;
  • condition of the shaft and splines;
  • correct play of the braking system.

The operations must be carried out by qualified personnel, respecting the instructions of the vehicle and component manufacturer.
